In the Footsteps of SuhrawardiAlready in 2006, when I dived deeper into the writings of the Iranian Sufi master and philosopher Shihabuddin Yahya Suhrawardi, I dreamt of visiting once his birth village Sohrevard in the province of Zanjan, NW Iran. In April 2019 my wish was fulfilled. We reached Sohrevard, meanwhile a proud small town with 8000 inhabitants, around noon. Our driver, who spoke only Farsi, brought us to the birth house of the great philosopher, where we were heartily welcomed by the villagers. They sent for the English teacher, Mahmood Mohammadi, to improve the communication. Mahmood showed us the village and its fountains, which not only supply the inhabitants with water, but also irrigate the wonderful gardens with their walnut and fruit trees. These gardens might have inspired Suhrawardi to develop his philosophical ideas, assumes Mahmood. He also runs a small guesthouse together with his uncle Ali Bahrammi, where all are welcomed, who are interested to walk in the footsteps of the great philosopher (contact: m.eshragh71@gmail.com). You can find a more detailed report of this event here. |
