The Holy Mountain of the Sami PeopleBut my real goal in the Varanger National Park was the Grythaugen, in Sami language Stuorra Ruitu. It is part of the mighty mountain ridge, which goes across the whole National Park. From Bealjáidčearru, in Norwegian Skipskjølen, it is separated through the deep carved Bjørnskaret. The Grythaugen is a holy mountain for the Sami people. And at its summit there is an old offering place. Because it is at the uttermost Eastern end of the mountain ridge, it also offers an amazing view over the landscape until the sea shore and beyond. |
